About Dr Katharine Scutt

Hi, I'm Katie, a registered psychologist with experience supporting children and families, adolescents and adults across a range of mental health and wellbeing concerns.

I hold a PhD in Clinical Psychology, where my research examined the relationship between eating disorders and wellbeing. This area remains a particular area of expertise within my practice. While reducing symptoms and distress is an important part of therapy, I also believe in helping people strengthen their wellbeing, work towards what matters most to them, and build meaningful and fulfilling lives.

I work collaboratively with clients to understand the bigger picture, identify practical pathways forward, and support lasting change.

My approach

Understanding Before Change

I believe meaningful change begins with understanding. Rather than focusing solely on symptoms, I work collaboratively with clients to develop a shared understanding of the factors contributing to their current difficulties and wellbeing.

This understanding helps guide therapy in a way that is personalised, purposeful, and tailored to each person's goals.

Evidence-Based & Collaborative

I draw on evidence-based psychological approaches and adapt therapy to the person sitting in front of me.

Therapy is a collaborative process. You bring your experiences, strengths, values, and goals. I bring psychological knowledge, clinical skills, and an objective perspective. Together, we work towards developing practical pathways for change.

Beyond Symptom Reduction

Reducing distress is often an important goal of therapy, but I believe mental health involves more than simply the absence of symptoms.

Alongside addressing difficulties, therapy can support wellbeing, resilience, self-understanding, and movement towards a life that feels meaningful and aligned with what matters most to you.

Therapy Via Secure Video Telehealth

Based in Canberra, I provide individual therapy via secure video telehealth to adolescents and adults in the Canberra region and across Australia.

Research has consistently found that video-based therapy can be an effective way of delivering psychological support for many common mental health concerns. Many clients appreciate the flexibility, accessibility, and convenience of attending therapy from an environment where they feel comfortable.

Sessions are conducted via video allowing us to build connection and engage in therapy in a way that is more closely aligned with an in-person experience.

I believe good mental healthcare works best when it is connected to a person's broader support network.

For this reason, it is important that clients maintain a relationship with a regular GP, psychiatrist, and/or pediatrician throughout therapy, whether they are accessing services through a Mental Health Care Plan or privately.

Where appropriate and with your consent, I may communicate with your GP or other treating health professionals to support coordinated care and continuity of treatment.

Working with your GP

The relationship between client and psychologist is one of the most important factors influencing the success of therapy.

Part of the initial stages of therapy involves understanding your goals, exploring your concerns, and considering whether my approach and service are likely to be a good fit for your needs. If I believe another service or practitioner may be better suited to your circumstances, I will discuss this with you and support you in accessing appropriate care.
